In 2025, the global community will mark the thirtieth anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women and adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (1995).
I am delighted to announce I will be hosting a side event on March 12, entitled “Celebrating Beijing + 30: Past, Present and Future.
At the upcoming sixty-ninth session of the Commission on the Status of Women that will take place at United Nations Headquarters in New York from 10 to 21 March 2025, the main focus of the CSW will be on the review and appraisal of the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and the outcomes of the 23rd special session of the General Assembly. The review will include an assessment of current challenges that affect the implementation of the Platform for Action and the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of women and its contribution towards the full realization of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Past:
We will look back at the history of the Beijing Platform for Action adopted in 1995, what was happening at the time, and why has been such a landmark human right instrument for ending all forms of violence against women and girls. Speakers will include women who were there at the 1995 Fourth World Congress where the Beijing Platform for Action adopted.
Present:
Next, we will examine the state of gender equality and the elimination of all forms of violence against women and girls today. We will explore whether or not and how the situations of women and girls have improved. We will specifically focus on FGM, the trafficking of women and girls for the purpose of sexual exploitation and the reduction of the gender pay and leadership gap based on the recently published indices by the World Economic forum
- Have they gotten worse, if so, how?
- How have recent world events such as the Covid Pandemic, the War in Ukraine, the War in Gaza, the rise of the Global South and increasing tensions between it and the Global North, as well as the recent US election in November 2024 specifically and the rise of authoritarian governments worldwide more broadly, made thing worse?
- How have things improved?
Future:
Finally, we will explore the question,
“Given the current global context and emerging global trends: Where do we go from here?”
Where do we go from here?
1. Global Context:
- The rise of the Global South and increased tensions between the Global South and Global North especially in the case of China
- Israel’s war in Gaza and it’s expansion in the Middle East
- The US election of President Trump specifically, and the rise of authoritarian regimes around the world, more broadly
2. Emerging Trends:
- Global warming and climate change
- AI
- The breaking down of the Post World War II settlement which is increasingly putting the system of international law and human rights at risk
- Gender Equality versus Gender Equity and what that means for ending all forms of Violence Against Women and girls.
Given the context,
are there seeds for hope and change for helping us to achieve gender equality?
What might they be?
